Standard (or Traditional) Facelift

  Overview

As age and gravity takes hold, and the wrinkles become heavy-set, a person can feel like their face does not reflect how they feel inside, and that their appearance is causing people to treat them differently.

For those older patients who wish to turn back the clock, our facelift surgery doctors can perform a standard (or traditional) facelift to significantly reduce sagging skin, jowls, and wrinles. Your doctor may also recommend a mini-facelift, brow lift, chin lift, or full facelift, depending on what you require. See some of these outcomes in our Testimonials section.

The Best Candidates for a Standard Facelift

A standard or “traditional” facelift will fully address moderate to advanced aging around the mid-face and neck. The goal is to give patients a rather comprehensive change in their apparent age by removing excess sagging skin and repositioning the underlying muscles and other facial tissue to repair the signs of aging. While the surgery is more extensive than for a mini-facelift, and thus more recovery time is needed, the results are more dramatic.

Because it’s such an in-depth procedure compared with a mini-facelift, a standard facelift is best for patients who have extensive facial aging (such as several inches of sagging skin and significant hollows in the cheeks or other areas). A standard facelift candidate also needs to recognize and accept that a surgery like this is performed under anesthesia and may require several weeks of recovery time before they can return to work or other daily activities.

  The Standard Facelift Medical Procedure

A standard facelift surgery is performed using incisions placed just behind the hairline, starting from near the temples, and continuing to around the front of the ear, hidden in the natural folds, and then down to the lower scalp.

Through these incisions, your facial plastic surgeon is then able to manipulate the tissues of the lower face to be tighter, while removing any of the excess skin to smooth creases, eliminates jowling and sagging skin under the chin, and restores a naturally youthful contour to the face and neck. Facial muscles in this area are often tightened as well, to provide support to the overlaying tissue. Fatty deposits around the chin and jaw are redistributed or removed, often involving the use of liposuction techniques appropriate for facial use. Any follow-up procedures to the first facelift may need to use alternate techniques to prevent excessive strain or damage to this delicate area.

Depending on the case, a standard facelift may be performed using local anesthesia with sedation or general anesthesia; your doctor will recommend the best option for your individual needs. Be sure to follow your doctors instructions for before the surgery and after the surgery to ensure the best outcomes.
