Nonsurgical Alternatives to Facelifts

While facelift surgeries such as standard facelifts, mini-facelifts, or brow lifts, chin lifts, or full facelifts can yield the greatest benefits for severe signs of aging, it’s not the right option for everyone and you may not need such a major procedure. There are plenty of temporary alternatives that can help you achieve natural looking results without the need to undergo the knife.

The latest in-office procedures are convenient, affordable, and beneficial, making it easy to temporarily rejuvenate and revitalize your appearance. You can find a solution for a range of concerns from the subtle signs of aging like volume loss and fine lines to deeper wrinkles and excess fat beneath the chin.

  Botox

Botox is one of the most effective nonsurgical treatments available for reducing the appearance of wrinkles, with over 4 million procedures performed in the US in 2015. A safe and virtually painless procedure, it can produce dramatic improvements in your appearance. Botox can be used to reduce moderate to severe wrinkles in your forehead, frown lines between your eyebrows, and “crow’s feet” or fine lines around the eyes.

One of the main underlying causes of these types of wrinkles is the repeated movements of the facial muscles over a lifetime as we squint, frown and make facial expressions. Botox works by temporarily reducing the muscle activity that causes wrinkles to appear. Botox contains a highly purified botulinum toxin that temporarily blocks the nerve impulses responsible for the muscle contractions. Botulinum is produced by the same microbe that causes botulism, a type of food poisoning. When injected into the area around the wrinkles, Botox works to relax the facial muscles and smooth out the skin. The full effect of treatment can be seen within 4-7 days following the procedure and results last up to 4 months.

Botox requires ongoing treatments to stop wrinkles from returning. For deeper wrinkles, it may take several treatments to achieve the desired outcome. This treatment has no serious side effects, but the most common side effects are temporary muscle weakness, redness, irritation, and swelling at the injection site.

  Injectable Fillers

As you get older, skin loses volume as it’s structure begins to deteriorate. The lips may appear thinner. The eyes may appear more hollow. Cheeks may start to flatten and lose their contours. The falling cheeks and new jowls are commonly caused by a loss of facial volume, creating the illusion of sagging skin.

Dermal fillers are used to fill lines and spaces, plumping them up to increase volume and restore fullness to these areas. They are a simple, affordable option for treating the subtle signs of aging. The results are immediate. They help to smooth and fill out the skin, creating a soft, natural appearance. The effect is a noticeably refreshed, more youthful look without anyone being able to pinpoint the exact source.

Fillers are commonly used for the lower parts of the face — the cheeks, the lines that run from your nose to your mouth, the lips, the lines running from the sides of the mouth down to the chin (marionette lines), indentations from scars, or any other sunken areas of the face. When necessary, dermal fillers can also be used under the eyes and in the temples. The majority of people experience little side effects, though some can be sensitive to the treatment or experience side effects such as redness, swelling, allergic reactions, and bump formations under the skin.

Fillers provide an immediate result with little to no downtime. However, results are temporary for all the artificial dermal fillers — even permanent fillers only last five years — and most need to be regularly maintained every six to twelve months.

  Threadlifts

Threadlifts are the new popular non-surgical facelift option. The procedure can be performed in under 2 hours and involves a cosmetic surgeon inserting thin threads into the face through tiny incisions in the targeted area. The threads attach to underneath the skin and are pulled back to lift and smooth the face. The ends of the threads are hidden and the results of the lift are immediate. The effects last about 18 months, at which point the threads bio-degrade and are absorbed by the body.
